Are We Selling SEO?

All over this website you’ll see references to SEO. We at Great Leap Studios tell people we are an SEO Company. We focus a lot of our content on SEO, and if you take the literally definition of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), we absolutely are an SEO company.

But for decades, SEO had a different meaning. SEO was about spamming backlinks, trying to get on blogrolls, keywording pages, and much more. Back when we started we didn’t even tell people we were an SEO company. We told people we are a content marketing company. We still do.

Why We Use “SEO” Again

In the past few years we’ve been using the term SEO again, rather than focus heavily on the other terms that are probably more relevant, including inbound marketing, content marketing, and just the basic term for everything – online marketing. Most marketers have stopped using the term SEO, for reasons explained in this Moz Article.

But we’re bringing it back. The reason is because, even though all of the former ways SEO was used are obsolete, content based SEO and its value are not. From the article:

If we go back to my first example, best headphones, the results are dominated by content that compares ratings and pricing for various headphones.

No one shares, engages, or links to products and services pages. The fact is, no one except for us cares.

Instead of trying to jam those pages with links, create a piece of content that delivers what Google (and users) want. By creating value with your content, you open it up to earning social media shares and powerful links from relevant sites.

If you want to compete against the big dogs for organic search real estate, content is your best option.

Content, which is our number one service here at Great Leap Studios, is still the primary way to rank in search engines, participate in social media, and – above all else – turn users that visit the site into customers, which is SEO in its own way. It’s more important to have 10 out of 10 visitors become customers than 1 out of 100. If you want to be truly “optimized” for Google, then you want to make sure that when you do get hits, those hits are converting. That is how you really optimize.

So whether you call it SEO, content marketing, inbound marketing, digital marketing, or something else, you’re still referring to a very basic idea – building your site, getting it out there, and turning it into something that will generate you new business. SEO is not dead, because SEO is a dynamic service, one whose meaning changes based on what you’re performing to optimize it.
