Google Search Does Not Use Keyword Meta Tags

Quick post today about a common misconception about SEO. Many SEO companies still believe that meta tags are an important part of search engine marketing, particularly keyword meta tags. While meta tags themselves (such as adding a description) does still play a role, and since some search engines do still use meta tags in their ranking, we don’t necessarily advise against using meta keywords.

But it should be noted that Google itself has said specifically that they ignore keyword meta tags in their search engine ranking. They have since 2009, and they will likely continue to ignore them while their algorithm advances.

So while keywords in text are still useful, and meta keyword tags still have their place, the reality is that in most cases they’re simply an extra step without much of a benefit. Something to keep in mind as you decide how to allocate your time.
