After everything that goes into having a new website built for your business, the last thing on most lists is the content.
The text on your site that conveys your branding message, convinces visitors to buy or signup for an email list, and that builds relationships with your audience.
That stuff is precious gold and yet it often gets relegated to last and given the short end of the budgetary stick.
On top of that, thereโs the expertise issue. When you hire people to develop things for you, you associate value based on how hard it would be for you to do that same task.
I canโt create a custom banner for a website, so when a designer quotes me $300 for a banner, it sounds fair. If I knew how to use PhotoShop, though Iโd probably be a little turned off by the price. The same is true for writing. We all CAN write, so itโs hard to imagine paying more than the perceived value of that content.
But content, especially the content on your website, is vitally important – so much so that it should be the first thing you budget for and the one thing you never scrimp on.
How Much SHOULD You Pay?
With that said, exactly how much money should you spend for that content? As I said the other day, Iโm not going to sugarcoat things here. I want you to know exactly what I feel solid website content is worth.
Great Leap Studiosโ rates start at about $50 per page. That can increase if the page is designed strictly to solicit leads or drive sales. Sales copy in particular is a fine art that takes a lot more time and testing.
But for a page about your services or a location landing page designed to showcase where you offer your services, we charge $50 per page and this is a good price. You will find a fair number of larger firms charging anywhere upwards of $100-$150 for similar sized pages.
Of course, there are plenty of services that offer the same length content for half what we charge, sometimes less.
Why Pay More?
Without delving too much into a sales pitch, there is a very real difference between a $10 page of content and a $50 page of content. Consider the things we do when crafting a single page of content for your website:
- Keyword Research
- Traffic Analysis
- Competitor and Market Research
- Multi-Stage Drafting
- Three Tier Editing
And thatโs for every page we develop. So no page goes up on your site without having been thoroughly vetted by one of our branding experts to determine if weโre targeting the right terms, building on strong traffic trends on your site, and producing flawless, error free content.
For $10 you might get something like that, but more likely youโll get a mediocre article that works, but doesnโt get the job done in terms of SEO or conversions.
The Final Cost
The average new website has about 20-25 pages of content. So for a well written website, professionally vetted, thoroughly researched, and edited to read crisply and cleanly, youโre looking at roughly $1,000.
Whether thatโs right in your wheelhouse or more than you expected, give us a call and we can discuss exactly how to fit your budget and get your site finished.
