10 Best Podcasts for Small Business Owners

In May, Micah and I started a podcast about content marketing – the Great Leap Studios Content Marketing Podcast (we are a clever pair, aren’t we). But before producing our own podcast episodes we were both actively listeners of numerous other podcasts from top marketers, business owners and tech-savvy speakers in the field.

Here are 10 of my personal favorite podcasts – resources I feel every small business owner can learn from when developing new strategies for their company.

HBR IdeaCast

The Harvard Business Review is an institution, but I’ll be honest – I have never read it. The podcast, however, is timely, relevant and loaded with gems about business in general, including small business and startups.

Duct Tape Marketing

I love John Jantch’s work. Duct Tape Marketing and The Referral Engine both had a huge impact on me and how I market my business. His podcast is just as loaded with great ideas.

Small Business Big Marketing Show

Smallbusinessbigmarketing

Hosted by Luke Moulton and Timbo Red, this is a great small business podcast with insights from overseas.

Wall Street Journal on Small Business

wsj-smallbusiness-1400x1400

Another more traditional source but in a very well done, easy to follow, and often information and idea rich format that is a surprising amount of fun to listen to.

I Love Marketing

lovemarketing

This one is great because it’s not from a couple of MBAs with 22 years of school and endless theories to throw at you. Started by Joe Polish, a one time carpet cleaner, I Love Marketing is loaded with new and old marketing ideas from across the spectrum of both online and offline channels.

Mixergy

mixergy

I love Mixergy for its blend of audio and video content and its boat load of interviews with top experts. This is video by default but there’s enough audio to keep you motivated.

The Human Business Way

humanbusinessway

Chris Brogan’s podcast is another great mix of fun stories, solid marketing tips, and small business-savvy strategies from his guests and Brogan alike.

David Allen Company Podcast

gtdpodcasts

This is the “Getting Things Done” guy and if you haven’t read his book, Getting Things Done, stop reading this and do that now. He’s a genius at productivity and work/life balance.

Social Pros Podcast

social-pros-album-art

Hosted by Jay Baer, this is a great podcast for anyone who wants to hear how other businesses are using social media effectively.

Social Media Examiner

socialmediamarketing-michaelstelzner

Another great social media focused podcast, loaded with general tips for businesses about social media and marketing alike.

If you’re eager to get new insights about running a business in the digital age, starting your new one, or just getting the most out of what you already have, definitely give these podcasts a listen, and of course, don’t forget to check out the GLS Content Marketing Podcast while you’re at it, here on the site, or in iTunes.
